Types of Financial Aid
Paragraphs

A Pacific University education may be closer than you think. Through scholarships, grants, loans and employment, financial aid packages are designed to bring down the published cost of attendance for students.

Financial aid eligibility begins with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA. All students should complete the FAFSA in the year prior to beginning their first — or next — year of college. The FAFSA is the starting point to receiving a financial aid package from Pacific or any college. The FAFSA typically opens in the late fall/early winter for the following academic year. Complete your FAFSA early to make the most of your financial aid opportunities!

Once we have received your completed and verified FAFSA, we will send you a financial aid offer. This offer may include a variety of different kinds of financial aid, explained below.

Scholarships

Scholarships are a form of financial aid from private or nonprofit organizations, including from Pacific or outside organizations. Scholarships do not have to be repaid. Scholarships may be awarded based on financial need, academic merit, talent, or a particular area of study. Many Pacific scholarships are automatically granted to students based on their college application information. Some other Pacific scholarships require additional applications. Scholarships from outside organizations typically require an application to that organization, and the scholarship needs to be reported to Pacific as part of your financial plan.

Grants

Grants are a form of financial aid, often from a government source. Grants typically do not need to be repaid, but they may come with specific obligation. For example, some grants are awarded to students pursuing high-need careers and require a term of service in that career. Other grants are based on financial need and may change if your financial circumstances change.

Loans

Student loans are funds that you borrow and must pay back with interest. If you apply for financial aid, you may be offered federal loans as part of your financial aid package. Some students may also seek private loans to offset education costs, though these often come with a higher interest rate than federal loans.

Work-Study & Employment

Some students may be eligible for work-study as part of their financial aid package. That means students have the opportunity to work part-time, often on campus, to offset their tuition expenses. Work-study jobs are based on financial need, and the university (or outside employer) receives federal funding to pay the student's wages. Students may also seek non-work-study jobs on campus or in the community to earn money toward their college and living expenses.
