Reporting a Concern
If you would like to report a concern about a fellow Pacific University community member, here are the steps to do so:
Concerned about a fellow student:
- If the student is currently in danger, creating danger, or being very disruptive, call Campus Public Safety at 503-352-2230 or 911
- If the student is not currently in danger and you would like to report a concern about a student, you can submit a Care Referral online. When concerns are reported, the Care Team will assess the situation, offer support, and provide referrals to the breadth of resources on-campus.
- If you have general concerns about a friend and would like some tips on how you can help them, you can consult with the following people:
- Student Counseling Center (a confidential resource)
- Student Health Services (a confidential resource)
- Campus Living Resident Assistants or professional staff
Concerned about a staff or faculty member:
- If this person is currently in danger, creating danger, or being very disruptive, call Campus Public Safety at 503-352-2230 or 911

Who to Contact
If a faculty or staff member has concerns that a student may be engaging in problematic use of alcohol or other drugs, they should submit a Care Referral. The Office of Student Support will help determine the appropriate intervention in conjunction with other staff on campus who may have knowledge of the student. Faculty and staff members may also consult with the Student Counseling Center regarding the situation.
If a faculty or staff member believes that a student is under the influence of alcohol or other drugs, they should contact Campus Public Safety if the student is being disruptive or if the faculty/staff member has immediate concerns for the student’s safety or well-being. If the student is not disrupting the classroom or learning environment, the faculty or staff member should submit a Care Referral as soon as possible to report their concerns.
If a faculty or staff member believes that a student worker is under the influence of alcohol or other drugs, the student worker’s supervisor should be notified. The supervisor should contact Campus Public Safety if the student is being disruptive or if the faculty/staff member has immediate concerns for the student’s safety or well-being. If the student is not being disruptive, and there is no concern for safety or well-being, the student’s supervisor should submit a Care Referral as soon as possible to report their concerns.
Faculty and staff in graduate and professional programs should refer to internal program handbooks or procedures to determine if additional actions are necessary.
Who to Contact if you have a Concern about a Colleague or Coworker
If this person is currently in danger, creating a dangerous situation, or being disruptive, call Campus Public Safety at 503-352-2230 or 911. If this individual is not currently in danger, but the suspected substance use appears to negatively impact the work environment, contact the Director of Human Resources.
If you are concerned that a colleague may be abusing substances outside of work, you may contact the Employee Assistance Program (EAP). Information for the EAP is available on the Pacific Human Resources website.
