Faculty Lab/Mentor | Dr. Leonardo Bobadilla

Research Focus | Novel approaches to risk assessment in correctional settings; recidivism outcomes; violent and aggressive behavior

Undergraduate Institution | University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire

Why I chose Pacific | The primary reason I chose the PhD program at Pacific University was to work with Dr. Bobadilla. The match between our research and clinical interests allows me to further delve into the areas I am passionate about. I also appreciated that the program has connections with a variety of practicum sites that suit my interests, which sets me up well for internship and beyond. Finally, the proximity to the Portland metropolitan area was very appealing to me, and I have enjoyed exploring all that it has to offer!

Favorite PhD course | Clinical Neuropsychological Assessment – This course, taught by board-certified neuropsychologist Dr. Theresa Lafavor, explores disorders of the central nervous system. We were able to learn and practice administration, scoring, and interpretation of a variety of neuropsychological tests. I particularly appreciated the coverage of neuroanatomy and brain-behavior relationships, which has helped to advance my clinical assessment skills.

Hobbies | To help balance out the stresses of doctoral study, I enjoy running, playing tennis, cooking, reading, and checking out the unique coffee shops and breweries in the area!

Faculty Lab/Mentor: Dr. Leonardo Bobadilla

Research Focus: sexual violence, psychopathy, recidivism, well-being of Muslim adolescents

Undergraduate Institution: University of California, Irvine

Why I chose Pacific: I chose PU because of the research fit that I have with Dr. Bobadilla and the clinical opportunities that are available for me (e.g., forensic and DBT). Additionally, the current students and other faculty made me feel very welcomed and the vibes were comfortable for me to be myself. I foresee myself growing immensely as a researcher, clinician, and most importantly, as an individual and Muslim.

Favorite PhD Course: Advanced Statistics 1 – I took this my first semester and in which my mind was blown by how linear regression can be used to conduct any and all analyses. It was taught by Dr. Peter Vik, and he really was amazing and gave us a strong statistical foundation.

Hobbies: I am a huge gamer anime fan. I love to keep active by playing soccer, weight lifting, and playing soccer. I am involved with the non-profit Young Muslims profits where I am active in the leadership.
