Why Study Environmental Science?
Develop a deep understanding of conservation and restoration of natural habitats and species.
Students with an environmental science major with an emphasis in environmental biology explore field and laboratory approaches to environmental problems such as the conservation of rare or declining species or the restoration of degraded habitats. The environmental biology curriculum is heavy on field-based coursework in the forest, streams, grasslands and wetlands surrounding Pacific University. Projects include ecological restoration, species conservation and the development of land-use recommendations for regional land owners.
Environmental biology students at Pacific have many opportunities to conduct independent research with the support of faculty, often in partnership with local organizations. They build valuable relationships with land-use agencies, such as METRO and Clean Water Services.
What Can You Do with an Environmental Science Degree?
Environmental science at Pacific University stands apart from a traditional biology degree in the way that it integrates interdisciplinary core courses with a mission-oriented, problem-solving methodology. Pacific students completing this major have the analytical skills and technical background necessary to compete in the job market. Many pursue graduate studies in biological sciences or find jobs in consulting, restoration and government.
