Limerick, Ireland

With a population of five million, Ireland is known for its rich history, lush countryside, spectacular coastline, and for its recent astonishing economic growth that has caused Europeans to refer to the country as the "Celtic Tiger." While English is the most widely spoken language, Gaelic is also spoken in pockets of Western Ireland especially, reflecting the country's unique culture and identity. Long renowned for its literary tradition and scholarship, Ireland has one of the most highly respected systems of higher education in western Europe. Limerick is a thriving modern city, the fourth largest in Ireland. It is the capital of Ireland's Midwest Region. It has a long history that can be traced back more than a thousand years. Within a day's excursion are the counties of Galway, Clare, Cork, Tipperary and Kerry.
