Study Abroad in Hong Kong, China

Lingnan

Program Overview

Hong Kong, one of the world’s major financial centers, is a vibrant city of 7 million that sits at the mouth of the Pearl River Delta in southern China. As a gateway between east and west, it is a cosmopolitan metropolis where bilingualism thrives. As a result of almost 150 years of British involvement and rule (which ended in 1997) English is the official language of government and large-scale business within the Special Administrative District of Hong Kong and is spoken by virtually everyone although Chinese (Cantonese) is the language of the streets and remains the first language of the majority of the population.

Lingnan University, the only liberal arts university in Hong Kong, was founded in 1967. The overwhelming majority of classes at Lingnan are taught in English. Lingnan, with an enrollment of 2,600 students, is noted for its welcoming residential environment that would seem familiar to Pacific’s students. All Lingnan students are required to live on campus during their first year, but a staggering 85% choose to live there for the full duration of their 4-year degree program. Lingnan has a faculty student ratio of approximately 1:12, and prides itself on its Integrated Learning Program, with its focus on whole-person community-centered education, campus community and internationalization. The expansive Service Learning Program, which includes several credit-bearing options, is a key component of LU’s offerings.

Currently, the University offers undergraduate programs in Arts (Chinese, Cultural Studies, English, History, Philosophy, Translation, Visual Studies) Business Administration (Accountancy, Computing and Decision Sciences, Finance and Insurance, Management, Marketing and International Business) and Social Sciences (Applied Psychology, Economics, Political Science, Sociology and Social Policy). The University also offers graduate programs, including several offered by the AACSB-accredited Business School.

Academic Program

LU provides a broad range of classes offered through the separate faculties of Arts, Social Sciences and Business and will provide an excellent match for Pacific, Exchange students also can take an introductory Putonghua (standard Chinese) class, although it should be noted that LU does not provide sufficient Chinese-language options to be a destination for our Chinese-language students. The academic structure is modeled on the US system, with class performance assessed continuously throughout the semester and a directly equivalent grading system. Students typically will take five classes worth 3 credits each, although they can opt for less or more, from a minimum of 12 to a maximum of 18 credits. LU has excellent online class resources with syllabi available on each departmental website, thus facilitating the advising process for Pacific students contemplating a semester in Hong Kong.

Housing and Meals

Students will be accommodated in one of 6 on-campus residence halls. All students will be in shared accommodation, and it is a firm rule that they will be sharing with a local student. The facilities are excellent, with several very pleasant-looking common rooms, quiet study spaces and attractive rooms (though possibly a little cramped).  The University DOES NOT OPERATE any meal plan (Students will be responsible for their own meals).  There is a student cafeteria and a full service Chinese restaurant on campus that provides a variety of inexpensive meals.  There are also many restaurants in the neighborhood off campus.

Support Services

LU provides superb support services including the Buddy Program, whereby each incoming exchange student is paired with a local student prior to arrival, and for the entirety of their stay. In addition the comprehensive orientation program includes, at no extra cost, excursions during the first three weekends of each semester, of each semester to Lamma Island and to various landmarks (Victoria Peak, Stanley Market, Star Ferry, etc.) in downtown Hong Kong.
