The Pacific University Alumni Association Board of Representatives convened recently, welcoming two new members and tackling a range of critical university matters, including food insecurity and upcoming changes within the university.
President Rachel (Johnson) Boone DHS '15 presided over the meeting, which also included the nomination process for the next executive committee. The formal vote for these leadership positions is slated for the Board's next meeting on May 12.
Brad Breland '82, MAT '04 and Pete Truax '68, MAT '83 were officially elected to the Board, bringing a wealth of experience and dedication to the university.
The alumni office staff provided updates on the forthcoming launch of a new online alumni community, designed to foster greater connection among graduates. Plans for Homecoming 2025 were also discussed, alongside a review of the successful events commemorating Pacific University's 175th anniversary.
The Board was briefed on the university's ongoing restructuring efforts and the impact of recent national events on the campus community. These discussions underscored the Board's commitment to staying informed and engaged with the university's evolving landscape.
Continuing their focus on addressing student needs, the Board explored potential strategies to combat food insecurity among Pacific students.
Ron Calkins ’11 joined the meeting to share information about need and existing resources. Members are actively considering ways to make a substantial impact in ensuring all students have access to adequate nutrition.
A session was conducted to provide the Board with insights into the broader context of university philanthropy. The discussion focused on the fundamental reasons why universities nationwide rely on alumni support, equipping Board members with talking points to advocate for the importance of investing in higher education as a whole.
The Board’s standing committees – Awards & Scholarship, Archives & History, and Enrollment & New Student Support – each held individual meetings to advance their respective initiatives.
Additionally, representatives from the Education, Master of Fine Arts in Writing, and Black Alumni Chapters presented reports, highlighting the diverse ways alumni are contributing to the university's mission.
The Alumni Board continues to seek new members.
The next meeting will take place Monday, May 12.
