Study Abroad in Adelaide, Australia

Adelaide

Program Information

The city of Adelaide is the cultural and economic center of the state of

South Australia. With a population of 1.1 million, Adelaide is a major

Australian city, with a multicultural composition, outstanding physical location, natural environment and thriving arts scene.

Adelaide is especially notable for the remarkable areas that surround it, including its spectacular coastline, the Barossa Valley (Australia's primary wine-producing region), Adelaide Hills and Kangaroo Island. The areas around the city are dotted with conservation parks where students can experience large tracts of natural bushland with a striking array of native Australian flora and fauna, and wildlife.

Curriculum

Students will be enrolled at Flinders University, a medium sized Australian university, with a total enrollment of approximately 15,000.

Course offerings at Flinders in the arts and sciences are spread across 4 faculties, and 20 schools and departments, thus assuring Pacific students a wide range of academic options. Flinders is especially known for its offering in Australian Studies, Environmental Science and Health Sciences, although it offers viable academic options to students majoring in almost every academic discipline offered at Pacific.

Students will enroll in 3-4 classes, up to a maximum of 18 Flinders units. The Australian academic system requires students to exercise a great deal of initiative and independence in the classroom, with assessment generally based on 1-2 major projects and/or a final exam.

Housing and Meals

Pacific students will be housed in Deirdre Jordan Village, a student residence a short walk from the main campus that features views of downtown Adelaide and the ocean. Typically, these spacious apartments consist of 5 single bedrooms and a shared kitchen and living area.

Meals are not included in the program. While there are dining options on campus, most students prefer to use the cooking facilities in their apartments. There are several shopping areas nearby that are easily accessed via the Metro Adelaide transit system, which provides excellent service to the Flinders campus.

Excursions and Activities

The International Student Services unit at Flinders provides students a program of excursions throughout the year at an additional cost. Each semester an optional overnight excursion is offered to Kangaroo Island, which is known for its dramatic coastline and variety of native wildlife. Another trip is offered annually to the Flinders Ranges, in the South Australia outback, while day trips are offered to nearby areas such as the Barossa Valley and Adelaide Hills.
