Suspicious Activity at a Bicycle Rack

On October 14, 2024 Campus Public Safety witnessed a male loitering at the covered bicycle rack west of the UC/Washburn Hall on the Forest Grove Campus. This unknown male was carrying a partial BMX style bicycle as well as several inner tubes and tools. The unknown male left campus, refusing to identify himself and verbally ensuring that the officer understood this unknown male did not like the officer.

If you live in a residence hall, please consider securing your bicycle in the indoor space offered in most of the residence halls. If your hall does not have the space, please talk with Campus Living on any alternative options.

If you commute from off campus via bicycle, please make sure you secure your bicycle every time you park it and use a quality lock to secure it.

If you find that your bicycle has been stolen, immediately report this information to CPS and the Police.  If you see suspicious people in around bicycle racks or something does not seem right, call CPS at 503-352-2230 immediately.

CPS routinely patrols the bicycle racks around campus. While the University is not responsible for your bicycle or scooters, there are steps you can also take to help mitigate these kinds of crime:

  • Always lock up: It may seem silly to lock your bicycle or scooter every time you walk away from them, but taking a few seconds to do it can save you from weeks of headaches and paperwork.
  • Grab your keys: Leaving your keys in the ignition of your electric bicycle or scooter may prove too tempting for some people.  Same for leaving your keys in the locks.
  • Follow the light: Parking in well-lit areas is safer for you and your bicycle or scooter.  Since light makes it easier for thieves to be spotted and identified, odds are they’ll be less likely to choose your vehicle as a target.
  • If possible, use a u-lock or a chain, cable lock with a lock that has a key. Combo cable locks are very easy to unlock.

Check on your bicycle or scooter: Make sure that you are checking on your vehicle on a regular basis, even if you are not frequently using the bicycle or scooter.
