School of Pharmacy Community Connections through Outreach at Beaverton Academy of Science and Engineering
In a commendable display of commitment to community engagement, students from Pacific University School of Pharmacy have been actively involved in outreach initiatives at the Beaverton Academy of Science and Engineering (BASE). The collaboration aims to empower high school students with valuable skills essential for exploring careers in healthcare, aligning with the Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) guidelines.
Our Pacific student volunteers have been instrumental in providing hands-on learning experiences for the BASE students. Thus far, Pacific students have taught the fundamentals of filling a prescription, withdrawing liquid from a vial, mastering medical math, and understanding aseptic techniques. These skills not only contribute to the academic growth of the high school students, but also lay a solid foundation for those considering careers in healthcare.
The collaboration has evolved beyond the initial skill-building sessions, transforming into a multifaceted partnership. Pacific students will continue to extend their support by tutoring pharmacy technician students at BASE. Furthermore, Pacific faculty are actively engaged in the collaboration, contributing to the development of research posters, and acting as judges in an upcoming HOSA state-wide project competition.
