Athletic Training Faculty & Students Represented at 2023 Northwest AT Conference
The faculty and students from the Athletic Training Program will be sharing their expertise at the 2023 Northwest Athletic Trainers Association (NWATA) Conference. The conference is scheduled March 16-19 in Spokane, Wash.
Rebecca Rodriguez, DAT, ATC, is an assistant professor and the program’s coordinator of Clinical Education. Rodriguez joined the faculty this summer and already become an integral member of the team. She will be presenting “Current Trends in Sport-Related Shoulder Dislocations and Emerging Research to Prevent Recurrent Dislocations.” During this presentation, Dr. Rodriguez will be describing the current epidemiological data about shoulder dislocations and provide the implications for the clinical management of these injuries.
Dana Bates PhD, ATC, is an associate professor in the Athletic Training Program. Bates will be presenting with Shane Wibel, MS, ATC, (from Whitworth University) and Mitch Willert, MS, ATC, (from the University of Montana) on “Immersive Clinical Experience: What Are They All About and Maybe I Can Host Students.” In this presentation, Dr. Bates explains how the immersive clinical experience provides the student with a unique perspective of the totality of responsibilities for the practicing clinician.
Jeff Kawaguchi PT, PhD, ATC, is the program director for the Athletic Training Program. He will be presenting in the area of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. The title of his presentation is “Talking to Your Athletes and Patients about Race.” In this presentation, Dr. Kawaguchi will be discussion a patient centered approach to providing a safe and inclusive space for athletes during their athletic training experience.
Additionally 13 students will be presenting peer-reviewed posters at the conference. Student Katrina Boyd '24 will present "The Effectiveness of Kinesiotape in the Treatment of an Athlete with Shoulder Pain,” and Emily Thompson '23 will present "Effectiveness of Compression Sleeves on Decreasing Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness.”
