In Memoriam: Roy "Sam" Hirokawa ’62, OD ’63
Roy "Sam" Hirokawa ’62, OD ’63, died July 22, 2022, at age 82 in his Kaneohe home on the island of Oahu. He will be remembered for his legacy of service, music and faith. Hirokawa was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and a Son of Iolani School Class of 1957 in Honolulu.
Some of his fondest memories at Pacific were working with Dr. Fred Schiller, who helped start the Hawai’i Club, and performing at one of the very first lū’aus, where he played the ukulele and sang.
He was a colonel in the U.S. Army and served at a hospital in Tacoma, Wash., following graduation.
Hirokawa shared music, stories, home, and, most of all, his priceless smile with everyone. His family is confident that his Aloha will live on within us all.
Hirokawa was preceded in death by his daughter, Joni; and brother Howard. He is survived by his wife, Jeanne Dickson; his children and their partners, Richele, Marti Ann, Micah, Sarah, Jeremy, Benjamin, Rachel, Timothy, and John; his sisters, Myrtle Kaneshiro and Dorothy Kometani; and 28 grandchildren.
