Excessive Heat Expected This Week
The National Weather Service is forecasting excessive heat starting Wednesday, Aug. 11, and continuing into the weekend.
Pacific University campuses remain open, but the university is taking precautions to support employees and students during the heat wave.
Undergraduate students are beginning to move into campus this week. Those living in residence halls without air conditioning may be temporarily moved to lower floors, and extra fans will be available.
Tip: During the hottest part of the day, face your fans to blow out of the window. Turn them around to face indoors when outdoor temperatures have dropped.
Students also will have access to the University Center and other air conditioned spaces for extended hours with their Boxer ID cards.
On-campus students, watch for more information from Residence Life.
Employees who typically work in buildings without air conditioning are encouraged to work with their supervisors to consider working earlier hours or working remotely where possible.
Plan to drink plenty of water, avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day, and try to work in air conditioned buildings if possible. Learn more about heat-related illnesses.
Community cooling centers also will be open in local communities, including the Forest Grove Senior & Community Center, Forest Grove City Library, and Cornelius Public Library. Call 211 to find cooling centers in other areas in Oregon.
An outdoor employee return-to-campus celebration planned for Thursday — likely the hottest day, with temperatures around 105 degrees — has been canceled.
Pre-commencement activities on Friday, as well as August Commencement on Saturday, will continue as planned.
Please note that, due to changes in COVID-19 protocols, face masks are now required in public indoor spaces.
