Judges needed for high school & collegiate speech & debate tournaments
Pacific University is pleased to host the annual Hap Hingston Forensics Invitational speech and debate tournament to be held Saturday, Jan. 11, to Sunday, Jan. 12, at the Forest Grove campus.
The high school speech & debate tournament will need volunteer judges during the weekend. Previous experience in speech and debate is not required to judge at this event. If you are interested in helping, please register here by Jan. 8.
Our event is named after A.C. “Hap” Hingston. Hap was a faculty member at Pacific University from 1942 to 1973 and continued serving on Pacific’s Board of Trustees until 1983. He also served as chairperson of the department of communication and the director of forensics for many years. We are proud to have our tournament named after Hap Hingston.
Pacific University is also pleased to host the annual Fred Scheller Forensics Invitational speech and debate tournament for colleges and universities to be held Friday, Jan. 24, to Sunday, Jan. 26, at the Forest Grove campus.
The college and university speech & debate tournament will need both paid and volunteer judges during the weekend. Previous experience in speech and debate is not required to judge at this event. If you are interested in helping, please register here by Jan. 22.
We are proud to name our tournament after Dr. Fred Scheller. After earning his bachelor’s degree in 1943 from Pacific University, Dr. Scheller pursued advanced degrees and most of his career was spent at Pacific, as a professor of speech and the director of forensics. Throughout his lifetime he remained a strong advocate and a good friend of our program. We know that his loving spirit will continue to shine down on all of us as we celebrate the weekend together.
We anticipate up to 30 schools may attend each of these speech and debate tournaments. Please anticipate heavy traffic in the UC and numerous occupied classrooms on the weekends of Jan. 11-12 and Jan. 24-26, during the tournaments. We expect approximately 400 guests at each of these events.
If you have any questions about the competitions, feel free to contact Daniel Broyles or Jennifer Conner.
