In Memory: Duane K. Kaneshiro OD '70

Duane Kaneshiro OD '70 was born in Honolulu, raised in Hawai'i and Japan, and graduated from Kubasaki High School in Okinawa. He earned his Bachelor degree at the University of Hawaii, and earned his OD from Pacific in 1970.

He served 20 years as an officer in the Air Force, including tours of duty in Vietnam and in Europe, and completed his service at Travis Air Force Base. After retiring from the Air Force, he took on a second career and worked another 20-plus years at Kaiser-Permanente until his recent retirement.

Kaneshiro loved to play golf and fish, and he loved to socialize with others throughout his entire life. From piano bars to karaoke, he was an avid singer with a particular love for Elvis, oldies, and classic country music.

He is survived by his wife, Carmen of Vacaville; four children, David, Derek, Gary, and Shelbi; seven grandchildren; three sisters; one brother; numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was buried at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon, Calif., with full military honors, in a private family ceremony. In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family requests that memorial gifts in his name be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, a charitable service organization for wounded veterans.
