Nicholas Gitts ’73 enjoys bumper crop at Swan Island Dahlias

Nicholas Gitts ’73 is a third-generation farmer and owner of Swan Island Dahlias in Canby, Ore. More than 360 varieties of dahlias bloomed in the fields this year, welcoming visitors to wander the farm’s 35 acres and buy fresh-cut bouquets. Though the farm requires hard work year-round, compliments from customers make it worthwhile.

“When you have customers coming this time of year, and you hear the compliments and joy they get from seeing the flowers, it's very rewarding,” Gitts said. He plans to retire soon, leaving the farm in the care of his daughters. Additional information about the farm can be found on CanbyFarmLoop.com.
