Center for Sustainable Society Sponsors Panel 'Decolonizing Nature'

As part of Pacific's recognition and celebration of Native American Heritage in the month of November, the Center for a Sustainable Society sponsors "Decolonizing Nature: Indigenous Knowledge and Human Ecological Relationships" at 7 p.m. Nov. 5 in Taylor Auditorium, Marsh Hall 216.

The discussion panel will include Jeremy Five Crows, Javier Lara, and Tyson McEwan as they share their lived experiences and cultural values as it relates to land use and natural resources. 

Jeremy Five Crows is a member of the Nez Perce and works with the Columbia River Inter-tribal Fish Commission. His time traveling throughout the Nez Perce homeland with his family on hunting, fishing, and berry picking trips instilled in him a strong sense of place and a dedication to preserving the environment.

Javier Lara is the founder of Anahuac Produce, a farm located in Molalla, Ore., comprised of indigenous growers from Oaxaca, Mexico, who practice methods of farming from their ancestors. These dedicated farmers believe that to produce sustainably, farm workers’ rights and empowerment must be a key part of healthy farming.

Tyson McEwan is an international student visiting from the University of Western Australia and a member of the Bardi and Ngarluma people of Western Australia. He is active in regional and national efforts for indigenous peoples and indigenous students.   

The panel discussion is free and open to the public.
