New Pharmacy Professor Focuses on Toxicology, Poison Control
There’s a lot more to poison control than those old Mr. Yuck stickers.
Dana Roman is a new member of the Pacific University School of Pharmacy faculty and specializes in toxicology.
“I love the vast array of cases: anything from rattlesnake bites to poisonous mushrooms, jellyfish to industrial chemicals, plants to medications and so much more.”
Roman completed her undergrad and doctor of pharmacy degrees at the University of Pittsburgh, then worked for five years as a staff hospital pharmacist. She eventually became interested in emergency medicine and went back to complete a residency at Cleveland Clinic Akron General before completing a two-year clinical toxicology fellowship at the Arizona Poison and Drug Information Center in Tucson.
At Pacific, she is excited to develop her practice site with the Oregon Poison Center in Portland and to expose students to the specialties in her field.
“When I was in pharmacy school, I didn’t even realize that emergency medicine was a pharmacy specialty, and I definitely didn’t know about toxicology. There are a lot of niche specialties out there, and I think it’s our job as educators to expose students to as many possibilities as possible.”
