First Cohort of Pharmacy Leadership Track Students Prepares for Final Stretch
The Pacific University School of Pharmacy's Leadership and Practice Management track offers a five-course series in management and leadership skills needed to succeed in today’s challenging pharmacy practice environment. When the track series is completed students will receive a Leadership and Practice Management designation on their transcript and diploma upon graduation.
The series offers three didactic, or classroom, experiences and a two-course practicum to be completed during the students Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE) year:
- The first didactic course in the track is Leadership Skills and Abilities. In this course, the focus is on developing a personal leadership style emphasizing the importance of leading oneself before leading others.
- The second didactic course is Creating Professional Leaders and focuses on organizational awareness, accountability, and change leadership.
- The third and final didactic portion of the track is Ethical Decision Making. In this course, the enrollee learns skills and techniques to apply ethical judgment in leadership decision making.
- The fourth and fifth courses of the track occur in the P3 academic year and consist of a menu of leadership research and discovery assignments the students can pick and complete during any APPE rotation.
The assignments require students to apply leadership skills acquired in the first three semesters of the track and culminate in a capstone presentation of knowledge gained in their final week of school prior to graduation.
The first Leadership and Practice Management student cohort has now completed the first three classroom courses and is ready to head out to their Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience year. We as track faculty are looking forward to the Leadership Capstone work they will be completing and presenting. It has been a pleasure to work with students at the beginning of their leadership journey in pharmacy.
