English Language Institute

The English Language Institute (ELI) is a special program at Pacific University, which is near Portland, Oregon.  The ELI has classes for students who want to improve their academic English language skills before they take university classes in the United States. Most ELI students who successfully complete the ELI program transfer to one of Pacific University's undergraduate or graduate programs.

ELI classes are taught by instructors who care about their students' success and create a friendly and fun environment for learning. All ELI instructors have master’s degrees in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) or a related field.  They have also lived and taught in other countries, so it is easy for students to talk to them.
