Helen Sharp, PhD, CCC-SLP

Helen served as the Director of the School of Communication Sciences and Disorders from August of 2016 through April of 2023. She had the pleasure of working with the enormously talented faculty of CSD who remain committed to student learning and to moving the field of speech-language pathology forward through research.
 
Helen earned her Bachelor of Science in Human Kinetics from the University of Guelph in Canada and became fascinated with the care and treatment of individuals with cleft lip and palate and craniofacial conditions. She completed her Masters in Speech-Language Pathology at the University of Pittsburgh. She worked as a clinical speech-language pathologist at Loma Linda University Medical Center where she served on the Craniofacial and Pediatric Rehabilitation Teams and provided speech-language and swallowing services for individuals with head and neck cancer, trauma, spinal cord injuries, and other medical conditions. Helen completed a clinical fellowship in Clinical Medical Ethics with the Division of Internal Medicine’s Maclean Center at the University of Chicago and served as a Senior Fellow at Oak Forest Hospital offering ethics consultation and ethics education for a variety of clinical teams. Helen earned her PhD in Speech and Hearing Science at the University of Iowa.
 
Prior to joining Pacific University, Helen served as an Associate Professor in the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology at Western Michigan University and Adjunct Associate Professor in Preventive and Community Dentistry at the University of Iowa. Helen has published research and book chapters in dysphagia, cleft palate, and ethics. She is a past president of the American Cleft Palate Craniofacial Association and served as the Section Editor in Health Policy and Ethics for the Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Journal.
 
In her free time, Helen loves to bake, try out new recipes, and exploring the beauty of the Pacific Northwest with her family.
