Pacific University College of Education Provides Summer Literacy Camp for Local Children

Pacific University’s College of Education is administering a Summer Literacy Camp for 14 area children in grades three through five on the Forest Grove Campus.

The four-week camp began June 27 and is a community-based service in which 12 undergraduate and graduate students from the college’s School of Learning and Teaching and the School of Communication Sciences and Disorders are providing much-needed interventions and skill-building in literacy.

Pacific students conduct baseline assessments of each’s child and then provide individualized one-on-one tutoring and intervention strategies.

The camp takes a functional, environmental literacy approach not tied to the classroom, said camp director and assistant professor Eurvine Willams, noting that the camp includes field trips to the local library and Oregon Zoo (July 15) and also features a music arts and crafts day (July 8).

The camp runs from 9 to noon Tuesday through Friday, and will conclude on Friday, July 22 with a special graduation and party.
