4-year Education & Learning Major Plan for Students Seeking A Professional License in Multiple Subjects or Special Education

The Education & Learning major is designed to provide students with a deep understanding of the psychological, developmental, and curricular foundations of education. This major builds a strong foundation for careers working with children in various educational programs, including classroom teaching. Because Education & Learning is foundational to everything we do, it also prepares students for a variety of other careers such as Speech Language Pathology, School Counseling, School Psychology, Social Work, Recreational Education, Curriculum Writing, Patient Education, etc. In order to teach public school at any level in any U.S. state, a preliminary teaching license is required. Students who major in Education & Learning are not automatically granted a preliminary license but highly qualified candidates may apply to obtain their Oregon preliminary license in conjunction with the Education & Learning major during the final semester of their Sophomore year.

The professional license at the undergraduate level is designed for highly qualified students who have the space to add additional coursework in addition to the major. They must also student-teach full-time in their final semester and pass multiple licensure exams. Students wishing to seek licensure should apply to the licensure program no later than April 15th of their second year. For more details on the application process, please contact Cristy Sellers Smith, Forest Grove Undergraduate Education & Learning Coordinator.

The pages below outline a sample, ideal plan for undergraduate students who attend Pacific for 4-years and wish to obtain a teaching license by graduation. Other options are possible however students seeking an alternative route or schedule should discuss those options with their education advisor. Transfer students should refer to the 2-year Education & Learning Plan.
