Yeomans Helps People Advance Through Career Education
For many years, Lucie Yeomans MAT ’97 dreamed of a career in teaching.
While life’s journey never put her in a classroom full time, Yeomans’ quest to become an educator brought her to the world of career coaching, where she teaches clients how to be successful in their quest to find a job.
“A lot of why I enjoy career coaching has to do with the teaching side of it,” Yeomans said of helping job seekers find their purpose. “It’s delightful to see that light bulb turn on and see people discover that they do have a lot to offer, that they’ve got more than they thought they had.”
After spending time as a communications consultant and fundraiser, Yeomans founded her own company, Your Career Ally, in 2013. Since then, she has worked with hundreds of clients to position them for success in job searches and career advancement.
Yeomans’ specialty is in writing effective résumés, which is what ultimately led her into the field of career coaching. “People knew that I could write. Friends and family would ask, ‘Can you help me with my résumé?’ And that’s how I started getting into it,” she said.
“I have a sister who is a career coach. She told me that I could get certified in it and start a business if that’s something that I wanted to do. I’m like, ‘Wait, what? That’s a thing?’ So I looked into it and got certified. I haven’t looked back since.”
Yeomans’ own career background took a series of turns that built her experience. She earned her bachelor’s degree in journalism at New Mexico State University. She spent her first 10 years following graduation as a project manager for Intel, which eventually led her to the company’s Washington County operations. She went on to earn her Master of Arts in Teaching at Pacific in 1997.
“I really liked the faculty at Pacific. I loved the location,” Yeomans said. “It just felt right.”
The skills that Yeomans gained through the College of Education serve her well at Your Career Ally, where she offers programs designed for high school students, college graduates and professionals looking to climb the corporate ladder. Those skills not only include the basics of teaching but also the skills to put a comprehensive learning program together.
“All of the preparation that Pacific gave me in developing curriculum has really helped because that is what I am doing with my programs,” she said. “I have developed different curriculums to help guide people through the job search process. That includes some do-it-yourself programs for those who don’t need me to do the whole thing but want my guidance. It’s all about curriculum development.”
That experience has gained notice in the career-coaching field. Yeomans has won numerous awards for her work and has been published in Résumés and LinkedIn Profiles for New College Graduates (2023), Expert Résumés for Managers and Executives (2020), Résumés for Dummies (2019) and Modernize Your Résumé (2018). She has served on the board of directors for the National Résumé Writers’ Association and is active with Career Directors International.
Yeomans says that Your Career Ally has been the most rewarding, fulfilling job experience that she has ever had. She relishes seeing the people she works with succeed, much like how teachers celebrate the successes of students in the classroom.
“I get to walk along with them, dream with them a little bit, help them succeed and really help them see their potential,” Yeomans said. “That can open avenues that they may not have considered.”
Pacific University alumni have an opportunity to benefit from Yeomans’ experience on Saturday, Aug. 17, when she presents a free career strategies workshop as part of the Alumni Association’s “Life 101” series. The virtual seminar will include guidance on résumé building, prepping for an interview, job search strategy and career leadership.
A former member of the Pacific University Alumni Association Board of Directors, Yeomans is excited to provide her tips to fellow Pacific alumni in the hopes that they can take their next career step.
“I just want to give back and be able to share. This is one way I can get back involved.”
