Winter Weather Preparedness and Travel Safety Update

It is time to wind down and prepare for the holiday season and winter break. It is a time to enjoy food, family, friends and a little bit of fun. It is also the time to start preparing for everything else that winter weather brings: snow, ice, rain, high winds and a dip in temperature.

Here are a few tips and tricks to get through winter safely and merrily:

  • Be aware of your surroundings and any potential hazards caused by wind, ice, rain, etc.
  • Check to make sure your Boxer Alert subscription is up to date
  • Monitor the weather regularly — it changes quickly
  • Plan ahead when traveling: check routes, delays, detours, etc.
  • Stock your vehicle with winter gear in case you get stuck, delayed, or detoured
    • This may include tire chains, extra blankets, extra change of clothes.

Additional preparedness tips and resources can be found online on the General Preparedness and Safety page.

Campus Closures

If weather creates significantly hazardous condition the university may decide to delay opening or close for the day. Any change to operations will be announced via Boxer Alerts. The local media will also report any closures during their broadcast times.

Make sure your Boxer Alert subscriptions are up to date.  You can login online to Boxer Alerts and check your current information.

Keep in mind that campus closures and delayed opening might look different depending on your site, program and office.  You should check in with your program directors, managers and supervisors to clarify how these closures impact your areas.

Slips, Trips, and Falls

The rain and lower temperatures can result in slippery and icy conditions around campus. Facilities teams work diligently to mitigate snow and ice hazards but this can take some time and conditions may change throughout the day and overnight.  Always be aware of your surroundings, put your phone away and be on the lookout for these hazards.

If you need assistance getting around campus you can call Campus Public Safety (CPS) and request a ride between buildings.  CPS is able to accommodate wheelchair transportation as well.

Travel Safety

If you are planning to travel during the holiday break, especially by car make sure you are prepared for the weather.

  • Pack a "Go Bag" for your car
  • Check local weather based on your travel route
  • Check requirements for your route if going by car
    • Are any roads closed?
    • Are you required to carry tire chains/snow chains? If so, make sure you know how to use them.
    • In the Portland area, Les Schwab is a great resource and will teach you how to install them.
  • When traveling by air, flights can be delayed due to weather. Have essentials in your carry on suitcase in the event you have to stay overnight somewhere other than your final destination.
