Register to Judge Hap Hingston and Fred Scheller Speech & Debate Tournaments
The Pacific University Forensics Team is pleased to host both the annual Hap Hingston and biennial Fred Scheller Forensics Invitational speech and debate tournaments in January 2024.
The Hingston tournament will be from Saturday, Jan. 6, to Sunday, Jan. 7, and the Scheller tournament will be from Friday, Jan. 26, through Sunday, Jan. 28.
We anticipate many schools will attend these events, bringing anywhere between 100 to 300 guests to the Pacific Forest Grove Campus each weekend. Please anticipate heavy traffic in the University Center and many occupied classrooms during both events. Tournament operations will be on the main floor of the UC.
We are proud to have our events named after A.C. “Hap” Hingston and Dr. Fred Scheller, respectively. Hingston was a faculty member at Pacific University from 1942–1973 and continued serving on Pacific’s Board of Trustees until 1983. He also served as chairperson of the department of communication and the director of forensics for many years.
Scheller earned his bachelor's degree in 1943 from Pacific University. He then pursued advanced degrees before returning to Pacific as a professor of speech and director of forensics. Throughout his lifetime he remained a strong advocate of speech education and a good friend to the forensics program.
Both tournaments will need hired and volunteer judges. Previous experience in speech and debate is not required to judge at these events! If you wish to help, please follow the links below:
