Read Important Updates about OFLA Leaves

Earlier this year, the Oregon Legislature amended the Oregon Family Leave Act, or OFLA, which provides job protection for certain qualifying leave reasons. Effective July 1, 2024, OFLA leaves for the following reasons will no longer be protected under this law:

  • leave for employee’s own serious health condition
  • leave to care for an employee’s family member with a serious health condition
  • leave for parental (bonding) leave related to the birth, adoption, or foster placement of a child

With the passage of Oregon SB 1515, certain employee leaves that fall under the categories above will no longer be job-protected by OFLA, but will continue to be job-protected by Oregon PFML/Paid Leave Oregon.

If you are on an approved OFLA leave for one of the reasons listed above, the leave is not protected by OFLA on or after July 1, 2024. This change impacts OFLA leave only and any approved leave under Federal FMLA is unaffected. Furthermore, you may be able to apply for (or already be approved for) benefits provided by the Oregon Paid Family and Medical Leave, or Oregon PFML program, by contacting Standard Insurance Company, the administrator of our Oregon PFML plan. Please see The Standard’s Model Notice for more details about the program and how to apply. The Standard’s Model Notice is also available in Spanish.
