Notes from Under the Oaks | June 2015
Every Wednesday the Office of Alumni Relations holds a social media giveaway contest. The rules are easy: answer a question and you’ll have the chance to win a coveted Boxer spirit prize. A few weeks back we posted a simple question on the Alumni Association Facebook page: "Where did you work while you were going to school at Pacific?"
Over 70 alumni responded with possibly every office on campus; from Phonathon and the campus bistro to KPUR and of course, the Office of Alumni Relations.
It is usually clear to see the connection between our education at Pacific University and our current careers, but how often do we think about how our jobs in college prepared us for what we are doing today? I probably think about this question more than most because every day I see a little bit of my former self in the students I supervise.
I feel honored to have the opportunity to work alongside several student assistants and help shape them into the professionals they will soon become. While their job does include some routine tasks like assembling nametags for PUB Nights and folding Homecoming newsletters, we also prepare students to communicate effectively by having them draft emails, write articles and create alumni publications. Throughout their shifts we teach them how to stay organized, be accountable and answer emails and phone calls in a professional manner.
It’s funny to look back on my progress and remember that at my first student job on campus I was afraid to answer the phone. Student work and the great teaching at Pacific helped me grow into the professional I am today; I hope that it has done the same for all of you.
We would love to hear more about your current work and we will even send you a small gift when you update your employment information.
Please don’t hesitate to contact us if there is any way my office or I can be of assistance.
Best wishes,
Rachel Cadd ’12
