In Memoriam: William Howell '61, OD '62

William “Bill” Howell '61, OD '62 died Sept. 10, 2021, at age 82. Howell started his career in the U.S. Army before moving to Eureka, Calif., where he owned and operated a practice for more than 20 years. After selling the practice, he moved to Redding, Calif., and worked as an optometrist for a few years before opening a private practice in 1990. 

Howell’s last 18 years of optometry were spent at the VA Eye Clinic in Redding. He loved working with the veterans and especially enjoyed their stories. He said, “each one has a story and each story is different”. His work was his hobby and he enjoyed 56 years as an optometrist before retiring at age 79. Howell is survived by his wife, Judy; and his sister, Jan.
