In Memoriam: Robert L. Casteel ’54
Robert “Bob” L. Casteel ’54 died Oct. 8, 2021, at age 90. He attended Pacific University on a debate scholarship and considered a career in law before finding his passion for speech pathology. He completed his master’s degree from the University of Washington in 1960 and his PhD from the University of Oregon in 1969. He was instrumental in the development of the speech and hearing sciences program at Portland State, where he taught until 1992. He received the Frank R. Kleffner Clinical Career Award for a career spent trying to better understand and treat stuttering. He was declared a Fellow of ASHA and received OSHA's Honors of the Association, for whom he had twice served as president. He and his wife, Barbara (Pelton) Casteel ’56, met at Pacific and enjoyed 67 years of marriage. He is survived by his wife; son Robert G. Casteel (and Lori); daughter Joann Marie Price (and Steven); seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and sisters Delores Casteel and Peggy Glaze.
