In Memoriam: Edward "Ed" Hulden ’66

Edward "Ed" Hulden ’66 died Sept. 14, 2020, at age 76. He was born in San Francisco, Calif., on May 17, 1944, to Merle Delmer Hulden and Rewa Hulden Hodges Lillie. He graduated from Saint Francis High School in Mountain View, Calif., in 1962. In 1966, he received his bachelor’s degree in history at Pacific before receiving his master’s degree in health science and education at San Jose State University in San Jose, Calif., in 1968.

Hulden was a beloved teacher at Lietz Elementary School in San Jose for 33 years, and was well-known for his outstanding contributions to teaching science and environmental responsibility. His passion for nature and science developed at an early age when he was in 4-H and a Life Scout in Boy Scouts. He took great pride in sharing his love and knowledge of the outdoors, including water sports, with his students. He had a gentle heart, a calm demeanor, a humble spirit, and a great sense of humor which drew people to him. One of his greatest joys was teaching his nieces and nephew how to water ski.

During his free time, he was an avid sports fan, following the Oakland A's, Golden State Warriors, and San Francisco 49ers. Some of his favorite pastimes were spending time at his Sonora, Calif., cabin, sitting outdoors observing his koi ponds, collecting whale sculptures and Native American artifacts, and building hobby scale train sets. 

Hulden is survived by his daughter, Jennifer Hulden; his two sisters, Robinette Hulden Barclay (and Duane) and Christy Hulden Westmoreland (and Dave); nieces and nephew, Katie Barclay Cowan (and Christopher), Andy Barclay, Lisa Westmoreland (and Adam), and Lori Westmoreland; and his great-nieces, Sadie Beth Cowan and Skye Mathes.
