Clarification on Commencement for Class of 2020
We understand the disappointment many of you expressed yesterday as we announced the unfortunate decision to cancel the May Commencement Ceremony.
Because students and their parents were asking for clarity so they could make or cancel travel plans, we needed to communicate the reality that the ceremony would not be possible in the immediate future.
It is absolutely our intent to schedule an opportunity to celebrate the Classes of 2020 in person and give you an opportunity to cross the stage, whether you are an undergraduate or graduate student. There are an unprecedented number of scientists worldwide working on fighting this pandemic, but it will take time — likely months, rather than weeks. We do not know how long it will be before a ceremony will be feasible, but I take your point (those of you who emailed) that you would prefer to have your own celebration rather than a combined one next year.
While our ability to gather may be delayed, students will still receive their diplomas upon completion of their degree requirements, generally within a week or two of their original commencement date.
We look forward to celebrating with you as soon as it is safe to gather again.
