Sustainability at Pacific University: Stories & Events

Rent A Bike!

Pacific’s temperate climate and proximity to Portland’s pro-cycling attitude make it a perfect candidate for increased support of cycling as a sustainable transportation option. The University currently boasts a secure bike storage room at the Hillsboro campus, and both long-term and short-term rental programs for students (with maintenance plans included).

The rental bicycles have been custom built using refurbished and salvaged parts by the Community Cycling Center. These bikes are literally recylced cyles, so you can be proud of sustainable choice to ride instead of drive.

Greening Pacific!

Working Together for a Sustainable Future

In early 2007, Pacific launched a University-wide initiative to “green” campus offices. Led by Forest Grove community member Elaine Jane Cole, as part of her doctoral dissertation, 151 Pacific employees joined together in a grass-roots effort to modify habits and adopt more eco-friendly practices. The campaign continues to educate students, staff and faculty about eco-friendly office practices, including paper and supply re-use, environmentally-preferable purchasing options, and responsible recycling.

LEED-certified Buildings

As we welcome more students, increased program offerings, and additional faculty and staff, Pacific has made a commitment to “grow green” by committing to LEED-certification for new buildings.

LEED ratings are classified as Certified, Silver, Gold or Platinum. The first building to be LEED rated was the library, which received a Certified rating. All of the buildings constructed since the library have been awarded LEED Gold. These buildings include Burlingham Hall, the Health Professions Campus in Hillsboro, Berglund Hall and now Gilbert Hall can be added to this prestigious list.

Sustainability in Dining Services

At Pacific University, great strides have been made to reduce waste and offer sustainable dining options to our campus communities.  Pacific University Dining Services began composting kitchen and dining room waste in 2007, a decision which has diverted more than 28 tons of food waste from landfills.  We have also converted 100% of our "to go" ware in the University Center dining area into compostable products and are promoting greater use of reusable service ware.

In recent years, Pacific Dining Services has also formed a relationship with the Food Alliance, a non-profit organzations that certifies fames, ranches, and food hables for sustainable agriculture and business practices. Nearly 83 thousand pound of produce and 13 gallons of milk purchased by Dining Services came from local farms and dairies.

Additional sustainable dining options include vegetarian and vegan options, the choice of local cage-free eggs, and a discount for using your own reusable mug when  purchasing coffee or tea.  For more information about sustainable dining at Pacific University, please visit CampusDish.
