Welcome Back Returning Students!

The following information is provided to update you regarding changes that occurred since the end of May. For more information or questions please contact the Student Life Office at 503-352-2200 or email studentlife@pacificu.edu.

Pacific Welcome’s New President – Dr. Lesley Hallick

Dr. Lesley Hallick, Pacific’s 17th President, began her work at Pacific on August 1.  She was welcomed by staff and faculty at a “Sign, Shake & Ring” ceremony, much the same as when you first entered Pacific, but with a twist.  Faculty and staff lined the sidewalk from Old College Hall all the way to Marsh Hall and after shaking the hand of each person in line, she rang the bell to officially announce her arrival at Pacific.

Some of you met Dr. Hallick in April when she visited campus during the selection process and know that she is very interested in engaging with students.  She looks forward to getting acquainted with each of you over the next year.

Football

Pacific University took the first step in the construction of its new football program Friday, announcing the hiring of Keith Buckley as the Boxers' head coach.
Buckley arrives at Pacific after four seasons as part of the staff at UC Davis, including the last two years as the assistant head coach.  The hiring comes two months after Pacific's Board of Trustees voted in favor of addition of the program to the University's current offering of 20 intercollegiate athletics programs.  The Boxers are scheduled to take the field for a full varsity schedule in the fall of 2010.

With the addition of football, Pacific University will offer 21 intercollegiate sports at the NCAA Division III level.  The team will play as part of the Northwest Conference, which has yielded two NCAA Division III national football champions within its first 10 years of membership.  Other football-playing members of the conference include Lewis & Clark College, Linfield College, Menlo College, Pacific Lutheran University, the University of Puget Sound, Whitworth University and Willamette University.

New Tennis Courts

After a two-year wait, Pacific University students, faculty and staff once again have a place to get in a few games of tennis.

The University's Holce Tennis Courts opened at the end of June.  The facility, located on the northeast corner of campus at University Ave. and Cedar St., was completed in early June and opened for play soon after.  The courts will not only serve as a recreational facility for Pacific faculty, students and staff, but also as the home of Pacific's varsity men's and women's tennis programs.

The new version of the Holce Courts is bigger and rivals the quality of many local club facilities.  The $1 million complex features a total of six Plexipave courts, three of which are covered by a steel structure.  All six courts are lighted, allowing players to compete early in the morning and into the evening.

Each set of three courts are surrounded by a 10-foot chain link fence with "California corners" between the courts, helping to keep runaway balls in their individual courts.

The Holce Tennis Courts are open daily from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.  The courts will be closed at times during the fall and spring for varsity team practice.  Use of the courts is free to Pacific students, faculty and staff.

Vandervelden Court Facelift

We are very pleased to report that the Vandervelden Court complex got a facelift this summer by our own Facilities crew. The exterior buildings have been painted with designer colors, giving it a townhouse feel.

In addition to improvements made to the external building, Facilities is also working on remodeling the inside of the units. Internal renovations will be completed over a four-year cycle. The upgrades to the units include, new flooring, countertops, appliances, lighting and interior designer paint. The living room furniture will also be re-upholstered, giving it a fresh new look.

If we have a vacant unit during the academic year, we will remodel it and ask for roommates to volunteer to move into the new unit. This will help keep Facilities on schedule rotating through the units, so they can all be remodeled during our four-year plan. If we have more than one group interested in moving, we will default to the group who has the individual with the lowest lottery number.

We believe you will be very pleased to see Vandervelden’s new look! When you see Cindy Schuppert, Facilities Engineering Supervisor, be sure to thank her and her staff. They have been working very hard to make some real improvements for you over the summer.

Dining Services Changes

Dining Services Manager Bethany Bigelow and staff have been working diligently this summer preparing additional menu items and options for the coming academic year.

The Campus Dish web site has been updated and is now easier to navigate.

Dining Services continues to expand Green Thread sustainability practices with more local and organic products, energy saving equipment, reusable “to-go” boxes, and recycling practices.

Be sure to look at the declining balance dollar countdown in your new 2009-10 Boxer Basics, available in the PIC, that corresponds to the Block Meal Plan.  An automatic e-mail alert will come from Campus Dining every Monday if your balance drops below the weekly amount.

Keep in mind that with the Block Plan, you have the following number of board meals (all-you-care-to-eat meals) per week:
