
Barbara Jordan Health Policy Scholars Program
College juniors, seniors and recent graduates are eligible for the Scholars Program in Washington D.C. Participants learn about health policy concerns for disadvantaged populations. The program runs from May 17 to June 24 and includes $7,500 in support.
The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation initiative honoring former Congresswoman Barbara Jordan places juniors, seniors and recent graduates in congressional offices to learn about health policy. Scholars gain knowledge about the federal legislative process and focus on issues affecting racial and ethnic minorities and under-served communities. In addition to $7,500 in support, scholars receive a daily expense allowance for meals and transportation, airfare to and from Washington D.C., and lodging, which is provided at Howard University.
Scholars selected will also enjoy the benefit of:
- gaining knowledge about federal legislative procedure and health policy issues
- developing their critical thinking and leadership skills
- participating in seminars and site visits
- writing and presenting a health policy research memo addressing a specific problem of a particular disadvantaged population
Qualifications to become a Scholar include:
- U.S. citizenship
- enrolled as a senior at an accredited U.S. college orf university, fall of 2010
- recent alumni: graduated in September 2008 or later from an accredited U.S. college or university
- strong academic background
- be a member of a population adversely affected by racial or ethnic disparities in health
- and/or have experience in or with programs that address health issues affecting racial and ethnic minorities
- and/or have done previous academic work related to health disparities
Application is completely web-based. December 4 deadline. To complete an application, include the following pieces of information:
- an electronic copy of resume
- an electronic copy of official transcript
- a list of extracurricular activities
- the email addresses of at least two references
