The Berglund Center for Internet Studies held a successful roundtable presentation on September 14, featuring Dr. Tucker Childs, Professor of Applied Linguistics at Portland State University. Discussion was focused on documenting a dying language in Sierra Leone, West Africa, where a civil war has destroyed whatever infrastructure once existed in a place where no roads ever reached. Now, only nineteen elderly speakers of the language are still extant, making this project an urgent operation as it is the only chance to document the language before it disappears entirely.
The project has been Internet enabled and many problems have arisen due to the dusty, windy, humid conditions of the area and uncomfortable temperatures, as well as the constant battle of finding a reliable, portable power source. Students and faculty members from Research Development, Optometry, and the World Language, Anthropology and Sociology departments participated in this event.
The presentation was videotaped and will soon be posted on the internet at http://bcis.pacificu.edu/roundtables/Presentations/2009/
The Berglund Center at Pacific University facilitates both theoretical discussion and practical action relating to the impact of the Internet upon individuals and their communities worldwide. We study the effects of the Internet on the ways we work, communicate, teach and learn. The Berglund Center for Internet Studies was endowed by a generous gift from Pacific University alumni Drs. Mary and James Berglund of La Jolla, California. The Center has been hosting roundtable discussions since Fall 2005.
The next Rountable Presentation, “Technological Solution to the Algebra Dilemma”, features Professor Steve Rhine and will be held on Tuesday, Nov 10. For more information on our upcoming Roundtable Presentations contact: Jeffrey Barlow, barlowj@pacificu.edu or Theresa Floyd, floydta@pacificu.edu.
