Named NWC Student-Athlete of Week for third time
The goalkeeper is once again selected as NWC Men's Soccer Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week after posting shutouts against Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran
FOREST GROVE - For the second straight week and for the third time this season, Pacific University goalkeeper Andrew Stevermer (Jr., Gillette, Wyo.) has been selected as the Northwest Conference’s Men’s Soccer Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week. The award, selected by the conference’s sports information directors, was announced on Tuesday morning.
Stevermer was selected after a weekend that saw him collect his third and fourth shutouts of the season in victories over Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran and run his current streak of scoreless minutes to 394.
“Andrew came up with a huge save early in the match against PLU that kept the game scoreless,” said Pacific Head Men’s Soccer Coach Jim Brazeau. “He continues to establish himself as one of the top goalkeepers in the conference. We need him to continue putting in solid performances as we move into the second half of the NWC schedule.”
Stevermer made four saves against Puget Sound on Saturday, collecting his third shutout of the season as the Boxers posted a 2-0 victory. He added five more stops to his total in collecting his fourth shutout of the year as the Boxers beat Pacific Lutheran 1-0.
In 10 matches this season, Stevermer has solidly established himself as one of the top goalies in the conference and nationally at the NCAA Division III level. His 0.56 goals against average ranks tops in the conference and is the 26th best in the nation according to the latest NCAA statistics report. His .896 save percentage also leads the conference and ranks 16th best in the nation.
In addition, Stevermer will carry a 394-minute scoreless streak into the weekend. He has not allowed a goal since giving up a single goal to Whitman in a 1-1 tie back on Sept. 20.
This marks the third time that Stevermer has been selected as NWC Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week this season. He also earned the honor on Sept. 8 and Sept. 29.
Pacific will finish the first half of its Northwest Conference schedule on Sunday when they host George Fox at 2:30 p.m. The Boxers enter the contest with a 8-2-1 record and in second place in the league at 4-1-1 (13 pts.).
