Pacific celebrates Darwin's 200th birthday week of Feb. 9

Pacific University will join world-wide celebrations of Charles Darwin's 200th birthday on February 12, with a week of talks and activities about science, evolution, and society.


February 12, 2009, marks the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin's birth. As part of a global celebration of science and reasoning, Pacific University is marking this event with a series of educational talks and activities open to the entire community. Please join us for any or all of them!

Tuesday, Feb. 10, Dave Boersema (Philosophy Department, Pacific University) will speak about the history of evolutionary though in a talk titled The "Iron Law" of Competition: Evolutionary Theory and Society (UC Alumni Room, 11:45 a.m.).

Wednesday, Feb. 11, Chris Smith (Biology Department, Willamette University) presents a talk titled Connecting microevolutionary processes to macroevolutionary patterns in the Joshua tree/yucca moth mutualism (Price 202, 4:30 p.m.).

Thursday, Feb. 12, birthday cake will be served in the UC over the lunch hour. Also on Thursday, there will be a screening of a PBS episode "The Evolutionary Arms Race," which explores the role of evolution in understanding diseases. A discussion will follow, facilitated by Stacey Halpern and Lisa Sardinia of the Biology Department (Marsh, Taylor Auditorium, 7 p.m.).

Friday, Feb. 13, Anya Plutynski (Philosophy Department, University of Utah) will speak on the role of evolutionary thought in society in a talk titled From Darwin to Darwinism (Price 214, 11:45 a.m.).

These events are supported by a grant from the Elliott Trust, Academic Initiatives program; the Biology Department; and the Philosophy Department. All events are open to the entire community.
