Rebecca Reisch, DPT & Richard Rutt, Ph.D were part of the HPC faculty and students who traveled to Nicaragua to do a needs assessment in an elder care facility. Dec. 2008
The facilities that they visited are geared for the indigent, aging population and are similar to our SNFs, except they have minimal health care services available. Care givers have no training and there are many patients per care giver. Becca worked with a geriatric doctor while there and helped to design PT and OT clinic space. There are many opportunities for PT, and Becca hopes to continue to send volunteers to work possibly during breaks and/or summers and possibly at some future point be able to send students for internships.
