Pacific Hall Update | Week of July 10

The next phase of construction focuses on preparing to pour concrete for the grade beams and stair footings as the project builds toward pouring Shotcrete shear walls.

Material delivery of window systems and window prep work will continue over the next couple weeks followed by installation. Framing for new interior walls on the second floor will begin during the first week of August.

Construction Activities, Status & Impacts

Saw cutting, demolition of the existing floor slab, excavation and removal of subgrade material is ongoing around the level 1 shear wall locations this week. Excavation in zone 2 is ongoing with a targeted completion by early next week.

The next geotechnical inspection is tentatively scheduled for July 18. This work will continue to produce some noise from the equipment used for excavation until completion.

Saw cutting, demolition and excavation of existing floor slab and subgrade in the corridor north of the lobby for plumbing tie-in of the new level 1 restrooms is scheduled to begin next week on July 18.

Other miscellaneous selective demo tasks on level 2 will continue througout next week.

Roofing demolition at the mechanical is scheduled for Aug. 3.

American Heating is completing HVAC demo on equipment and ductwork that will be abandoned or relocated. This work is scheduled to be completed by July 24.

Coring of the level 2 floor slab for shear wall work and MEP penetrations will take place beginning Aug. 2.

Preparation and placement of rebar for the shear wall footings and grade beam will begin on July 24, with a target date of Aug. 1 to pour the grade beams and stair footings in zone 1. Zone 2 work will follow this sequencing by one week with rebar placement during the first week of August with the grade beam pour scheduled on Aug. 8.

Samples from the Shotcrete test panels were picked up on July 7. Test results to verify proper consolidation are expected this week.

Work on the brace walls has been re-sequenced. Work on the level 2 exterior walls is set to begin Aug. 1. Anchor testing on level 2 is tentatively scheduled for the second week of August. Brace wall work will proceed throughout the month of August, beginning on level 2, rotating next to level 1, and finishing in the east and west stairwells.

Framing of interior walls on level 2 is scheduled to begin on Aug. 4.

Material delivery and prep work for window installation in non-shear wall locations will continue over the next two to three weeks, with the first window installation scheduled from July 28 through the first week of August. Window testing is tentatively scheduled for the second week of August, pending the successful install and final pricing/contract signing of window testing by QED Lab.

The team is working on obtaining pricing for additional abatement work at ceiling locations that will receive new fire sprinklers (that were not abated as part of general ceiling abatement) and spot abatement of asbestos insulation on existing HVAC piping.

Upcoming Campus Events & Coordination

  • Weeekend of July15-16 | Car show. Organizers will begin placing fencing for the event on July 13. Screening will be placed on all fencing including the construction fence. This event will not impact construction on Pacific Hall. 
  • Saturday, Aug. 12 | August Commencement. The construction fence will remain in its current location and configuration with the fire lane remaining closed to pedestrians. Campus users and visitors are advised to please adhere to all posted safety notices. No construction activities will take place over Commencement weekend.
  • Students return to campus | Athletes begin returning to campus on Tuesday, Aug. 8, with full student move-in scheduled from Aug. 24 to 27.
