Pacific Hall Construction Update | Week of June 12

The laydown area has been completed inside the fence to the west of the building. Materials and storage containers for construction materials, equipment, and Pacific furniture were delivered last week. Walsh Construction and Dixon Demolition also are loading demolished material into dumpsters in this location and completing prep work for temporary protection of spaces in the building out in the yard. There will continue to be some noise and the presence of construction trucks and vehicles associated with work in this area over the course of the project.

Walsh continues to place floor and wall protection and temporary protection of spaces throughout the building. The majority of temporary protection is scheduled to be completed by the end of this week.

Scaffolding at the center staircase was constructed to allow access for demo and abatement of the ceiling above the staircase and walls immediately adjacent to the stair on level 2. Temporary protection of the staircase and handrails was constructed last week.

Dixon completed selective demo prior to hazardous materials abatement on level 2 last week. This week, they have moved downstairs to complete demolition scope on level 1. The majority of the first floor demo will be completed this week, except for the windows and areas to yet to be abated following selective demo and confirmation of changes to the abatement scope.

There will continue to be significant noise impacts associated with this work. Window removal is currently on hold pending resolution of questions regarding means, methods, and scope responsibility, preliminary abatement work, and updated pricing for window removal. This has not yet impacted the construction schedule.

Dixon began saw cutting of the existing slab for excavation to existing footings on Tuesday, June 13. There will be significant noise impacts associated with this work, particularly as they saw cut in the gallery on the east side of the building near the main entrance over the next two days. After this work is complete, saw cutting will pause and resume at other locations beginning next Wednesday, June 21.

PMG Abatement Contractors completed selective abatement of base scope first floor locations last week. This week, PMG has rotated upstairs to complete flooring and ceiling abatement on the 2nd floor. The target completion date for base scope abatement is next Tuesday, June 20. The abatement schedule may extend based on time needed to complete add scope work. This presents a minor risk exposure to the construction schedule.

Window removal may begin as soon as Wednesday, June 14, pending resolution of scope responsibility and cost. Windows removed on the first floor will be boarded over with plywood until new windows are installed.

Safety Reminder

A reminder that Pacific Hall and the area inside the construction fence remains closed to non-project personnel. Any project personnel entering inside the fence must continue to wear proper PPE. Please be advised that the fire lane construction gates may be propped open periodically for delivery of materials and equipment to the site. Campus users are reminded to please adhere to all construction safety signage posted at the gates, and refrain from walking down the fire lane even when the gates are open.

Move Transition & Storage

Pacific’s facilities team has moved a significant amount of furniture from areas with active work into storage containers with assistance from Walsh. Storage needs will continue to be assessed as the project progresses.
