In Memory of Jim Flory

Jim Flory with studentsPacific University Faculty Emeritus Jim Flory peacefully passed on Tuesday, Jan. 31.

Jim was a fine arts photographer who specialized in travel and sports photography. He began his career teaching photography at Pacific in 1987 and was responsible for the creation of the photography minor.

An avid travel photographer, Jim led numerous student travel classes over his Pacific career to locations such as Canada and Italy.

He was selected as a photographer with press credentials at the U.S. Olympic Track & Field competitions in 2008, 2012, and 2016, and presented showings of those works, hoping to inspire a new generation of sports photographers.

He also was commissioned by Pacific for the waterfall image that adorns the stairway of Cascade Hall.

Over the course of 30 years, he served as a professor, mentor and friend to countless Pacific students, alumni and employees.

He retired from Pacific University in 2018 with professor emeritus status.

He is survived by his wife, Jean, a long-time staff member in Pacific’s Housing Office, as well as their three children and grandchildren.

A celebration of life is being planned on the Forest Grove Campus at a later date.
