Dennis Smith, OD, MS

Dr. Smith currently teaches courses in Systemic Disease, Physical Diagnosis, and Advanced Case Analysis at the College of Optometry. He also provides lectures in the School of Physician Assistant Studies, and the School of Physical Therapy. Dr. Smith has won numerous teaching awards while at Pacific University, including the Junior Faculty Award in 1993, Optometry Faculty Merit Award in 1995, and the Didactic Faculty of the Year in 2004 and the Teacher of the Year in 1992, 1993 and 1995.

He has lectured extensively on the management of ocular and systemic diseases, and has a number of publications in optometric journals and texts. He serves as a Retinal Consultant for the Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center’s Diabetic Retinopathy telemedicine program. He is a fellow in, and serves as the chair of, the Western Region Admittance Committee for the American Academy of Optometry. Dr. Smith is on the board of directors for a local medical health center, which serves the medically underserved population in Western Oregon, and served as the chairman of the board from 2001 to 2004. He is a senior fellow for the World Council of Optometry and traveled to Brazil to participate in the development of that nation’s optometry programs. Dr. Smith has more than 20 years of experience in hospital-based optometry practice primarily in the Air Force and is interested in broad-based, full-scope eye care. Dr. Smith is a Fellow in the American Academy of Optometry.

After years of adding to his guitar collection, he has taken up the craft of lutherie.
